Here is a close-up of that same bench. Students have to perform the welds on the pipes while the pipes are fastened to the wall. The students are not allowed to remove the pipes from the wall while they work on them. In real life, a worker usually does not have the option to remove a ruptured pipe from the train to repair it. The ruptured pipe has to be repaired right in place on the train without moving the pipe.
The photos in this slide show were taken in the mid-1990's by Steve Grande on his Amtrak travels throughout the nation. The size of the photos is purposely smaller as disk space was expensive and download speeds were slower at that time.
