On this bench, workers are taught how to make proper welds and they are tested on their abilities to make solid welds. Some pipes just carry water under low pressure which requires one type of weld. Other pipes carry air conditioning and other fluids or gasses under high pressure which require a stronger weld. After students have done their welding on test pipes, the pipes are tested under various pressure conditions for leaks.
The photos in this slide show were taken in the mid-1990's by Steve Grande on his Amtrak travels throughout the nation. The size of the photos is purposely smaller as disk space was expensive and download speeds were slower at that time.
