Snow seeps in through the tiniest of cracks into the battery compartment under the train. Just a little snow at a time adds up to a lot after a train has gone through over 1000 miles of it at speeds close to 80 mph. All this snow has to be melted before this car can go out again.
The photos in this slide show were taken in the mid-1990's by Steve Grande on his Amtrak travels throughout the nation. The size of the photos is purposely smaller as disk space was expensive and download speeds were slower at that time.
