The Union Pacific Railroad has been carrying the eternal Olympic flame across America as part
of the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay. The flame is to reach the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake
City, Utah in February, and Union Pacific will deliver the flame. Whenever the flame has not
been traveling by foot or car, it has been traveling on a special caulderon car at the rear
of the Union Pacific train. The train has two specially painted locomotives and the passenger
cars are shrink-wrapped with Olympic graphics.
On January 16, 2002, the train was in Santa Barbara, at the Amtrak station, to receive the
flame and continue it up the California coast. The entire TrainWeb staff, Steve Grande, Ray
Burns, Matt Melzer, and Shivam Surve, took the Amtrak Coast Starlight and Pacific Surfliner
to Santa Barbara for the day to view the special train. A ceremony took place on State
Street to welcome the flame to Santa Barbara and deliver it to the train. Unfortunately, we
had to leave before the flame reached the train, as it was running late and our train home
was not! However, the photos of the Union Pacific train speak for themselves.
