Subject: Ampenny Bill Introduced
Dear Friends of Amtrak:
Senate Finance Committee Chairman William Roth (R-DE) introduced a bill to
create a capital funding trust fund for Amtrak today. "A secure source of
capital funding is critical if we are to strengthen Amtrak and reduce its
reliance on federal operating support," Roth said.
The trust fund would be created by transferring one-half cent of the
existing 4.3 cents-per-gallon of federal gasoline taxes that now go to the
government's general fund.
Amtrak's CEO, Tom Downs, testified before a House panel today saying that
Amtrak's survival would be threatened unless Congress acted soon.
